God Works Through Weird

A STUDY IN THE BOOK OF JEREMIAH

Good Morning!

Has God ever asked you to do something weird? Seriously weird?

I had been working in Eastern Europe for several years. It had become the plight of our ministry. Things were growing. Street meetings had grown into larger meetings and God allowed us to share the Gospel in house churches as well as extremely large churches. I knew that this is where God had directed my life to work for Him. Then one day, out of the blue, I received a phone call from someone in Beruit, Lebanon. THE MIDDLE EAST! He asked me to come to Beruit and be the guest evangelist for a five-night citywide crusade in their city. Many obstacles had to be overcome. The crusade would begin in one week. Linda was going with me and we needed new passports that would be accepted by the Arab government. This would normally take up to six weeks to obtain. We drove to Washington, D.C. to personally pick up our new passports from the U.S. Embassy. We got our plane tickets, but, had to find a way other than airlines from America because they were not allowed to land in this Arab country. God provided. Then Linda and I were both anxious and a bit afraid to be in an Arab nation. We knew their relationship with America was not good. But, God protected us from all possible issues.

It was a crazy thing to be invited to a place in the world that we had never heard of and then share the Gospel to 2,000-3,000 people each night. Linda and I many times were curious why God had given us this assignment. It really was a weird call for us.

Jeremiah had been called by God to deliver His message to the people of Israel and Judah. Jeremiah was faithful to be obedient to God with every assignment. But, one day God gave Jeremiah a weird call. Read it and tell me what you think.

"This is what the Lord said to me: 'Go and buy yourself linen underwear and put it on, but don't get it wet.'

So I bought underwear as the Lord instructed me and put it on.

Then the word of the Lord came to me a second time:

'Take the underwear that you bought and are wearing, and go at once to the Euphrates River and hide it in a rocky crevice.'

So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me.

A long time later the Lord said to me,

'Go at once to the Euphrates and get the underwear that I commanded you to hide there.'

So I went to the Euphrates and dug up the underwear and got it from the place where I had hidden it, but it was ruined--of no use whatsoever.

Then the word of the Lord came to me:

'This is what the Lord says: Just like this, I will ruin the great pride of both Judah and Jerusalem.

These evil people who refuse to listen to Me, who walk in the stubbornness of their own hearts,

and who have followed other gods to serve and worship--they will be like this underwear, of no use whatsoever.

Just as underwear clings to one's waist, so I fastened the whole house of Israel and of Judah to Me--

this is the Lord's declaration--so that they might be My people for My fame, praise, and glory, but they would not obey.'" 13:1-11

Now...do you think that was a weird call that Jeremiah received from God?

It happens. Sometimes God calls you to do something that is totally out of the ordinary. I work with "at-risk" young men. I never dreamed God would call me to do such work. But, God has given me a heart and great desire to share Christ with them and to be their friend, and to show them that we are brothers and in Christ all things are possible.

God may be calling YOU to some special assignment. I know we are in a pandemic. It is a greater time to be called to help someone. To listen to someone's hurt and be the person who God has sent to comfort them and give aid to them. Like a young man in his twenties who I ran into a few weeks ago who quietly told me that he is hungry and has no food. God has allowed us to help him every month now.

There is someone or some people around you that need your help. God is assigning you to be their Jeremiah and take God's message to them through serving in some way.

Here's a suggestion. Go to a private place and talk to God. Ask Him what He wants you to do. Ask Him to open your eyes to the assignment He has for you. Thank God for the assignment and then go do it! It could be a little weird in your eyes, but, it's God's will for YOU!

May God Bless You!
